FAQ about Naturopathic Doctor

Is a Naturopathic Doctor a medical doctor?

NDs are licensed medical doctors in the State of New Hampshire.  In addition to natural therapies, they are able to prescribe certain medications when needed.  They also order laboratory tests and perform physical exams in order to reach a diagnosis.

How are Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) educated?

Naturopathic Doctors must first earn their bachelor’s degree and fulfill pre-medical perquisites prior to entering an accredited 4-year naturopathic medical program.  They are then taught a rigorous curriculum from which they gain the skills needed to operate as a primary care physician and natural therapeutic expert.

How does Naturopathic Medicine fit into today’s health care structure?

This depends on the individual.  For some, we are part of their bigger health care team.  For others, we are the primary provider of the health and wellness needs.  The past 30 years have seen an extraordinary increase in consumer demand for safe, effective, and cost-effective natural healthcare.  Naturopathic medicine has emerged as the health care profession best suited to meet this demand.

How many visits will I need?

After the first visit, many patients return 1 month later for a follow-up to review progress and any lab results.  Depending on the complexity of your health condition, you may require more frequent visits.  If you have additional questions regarding likely visit frequency for your specific situation, please call our office for a complementary 15-minute consultation.

Are Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) covered by insurance?

Many insurance companies (PPOs primarily) are beginning to reimburse for visits with Naturopathic Doctors.  We assist our patients with the paperwork needed for reimbursement by their insurance company.  For many insurance companies, we are considered “out of network specialists.”
